Fans of the iconic Dragon Quest series can breathe a sigh of relief as series creator Yuji Horii has confirmed that Dragon Quest 12 is still in development. During a recent livestream with his radio show group KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, as reported by Automaton, Horii shared that the team at Square Enix is diligently "working hard" on the project. This update marks the first news about the game since May 2024, when Horii had previously acknowledged the passing of the series' beloved character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. Additionally, the former lead producer, Yu Miyake, had already transitioned to head Square Enix's mobile game division by that time.
Amidst concerns of cancellation due to restructuring at Square Enix and a dearth of updates, Horii's latest comments reassure fans that Dragon Quest 12 remains on track. Information about the game will be released gradually, keeping the anticipation alive.

Dragon Quest 12 was unveiled as part of the series' 35th anniversary celebration, marking it as the first mainline installment since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Since the announcement, Square Enix has also celebrated the success of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which surpassed sales expectations by selling 2 million copies.
