Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has significantly increased its investment in Kuro Games, the developer of popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This move grants Tencent majority control of the company.
Tencent's Expanded Stake
Tencent now holds approximately 51.4% of Kuro Games' shares, securing a controlling interest. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external shareholder.
Maintaining Independence
Despite Tencent's majority ownership, Kuro Games assures continued independent operation. This model mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful studios like Riot Games and Supercell, emphasizing long-term strategic autonomy. Kuro Games cites this acquisition as fostering a "more stable external environment." Tencent has yet to release an official statement.
Kuro Games' Success
Kuro Games has achieved notable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue. Wuthering Waves has even earned a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards, highlighting its critical acclaim. Both titles continue to receive regular updates.
