Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 modders have continued their impressive work since the game’s record-breaking launch last year, and their newest achievement may be the most significant yet.
Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop and creator of the impressive Astartes Overhaul mod for Space Marine 2, announced the launch of a 12-player cooperative mode this week, and early footage looks outstanding. Gameplay reveals multiple players fighting a Tyranid Trygon Prime in an encounter that feels like an MMO-style boss battle.
This achievement seemed unlikely at first, given that the base game supports a maximum of three players in co-op. However, with backing from developer Saber Interactive, the modding team not only overcame that limitation but also aims to enhance Space Marine 2 even further.
“I’m genuinely amazed by Saber’s support for the modding community,” Tom shared with IGN. “None of us anticipated 12-player PvE sessions becoming feasible so quickly—yet here we are. Thanks to their openness and partnership, we’ve made a huge step forward that completely transforms what’s possible.”
It’s important to clarify that the current version of the mod is still in testing—though it’s performing well. The 12-player co-op naturally disrupts the game’s PvE balance, as you might expect when nine extra players join battles originally designed for three.
But with the expanded player count now unlocked, modders are already developing content to take full advantage. Tom told IGN the team is working on modes like prop hunt, PvP within operations, major updates for the upcoming horde mode, and—most thrilling of all—raid-style missions featuring “bosses with devastating attacks that require coordinated teamwork and introduce entirely new mechanics.”
The Space Marine 2 modding community has flourished into a sizable group, with roughly 20,000 members in its primary Discord server.
“As both a modder and a player, it’s impossible not to feel excited,” Tom added. “Huge thanks to the Saber team for enabling all of this while also delivering great official content—without the predatory battle-pass systems we’ve come to expect in modern games.”

It’s an exciting period for Space Marine 2 overall—with the horde mode arriving soon, a new class in development, plus more Operations maps and weapons. Saber recently shared details for Patch 8, confirmed certain horde mode mechanics, and unveiled the associated map.
Space Marine 3 has also been officially confirmed, which comes as no surprise given the success of its predecessor. This 12-player co-op mod makes us wonder if it offers a preview of what the sequel might bring. When Space Marine 3 was announced, the developers promised “larger-scale and even more spectacular battles,” which sounds a lot like an increased co-op player count.
Until more is revealed, modders will keep the experience dynamic and engaging—and this latest release is a perfect example of that spirit.
