Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into the Future
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the footage offers a sneak peek at the game's visual style and gameplay.
The last major Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster. This upcoming title, however, promises a completely new experience. The footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, is a pre-rendered cinematic showcasing a simulated fight. While not actual gameplay, the impeccably choreographed combat sequence, reminiscent of a Hong Kong action film, highlights the game's refined visuals.
Evolving Visuals: A Blend of Realism and Style
The in-engine graphics showcase a departure from the series' iconic polygonal style. The visuals aim for a more realistic aesthetic, blending elements reminiscent of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The trailer features Akira, the franchise's protagonist, in updated outfits, diverging from his classic look.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio at the Helm
Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading development. They are also handling Sega's announced Project Century. This suggests a significant commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter franchise.
While details remain scarce, Sega's enthusiasm is palpable. As President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared during the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" This new entry promises a fresh start for a beloved fighting game franchise, and the showcased footage generates considerable excitement for its future.
