Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) will launch in Japan with significant content alterations following a CERO Z rating from Japan's game rating board. This rating necessitates changes to align with Japanese content guidelines.
CERO Z Rating and Content Modifications
Ubisoft Japan announced that the Japanese version of AC Shadows will omit dismemberment and decapitation. Depictions of wounds and severed body parts will also be altered. While some Japanese audio modifications are confirmed, specifics remain undisclosed. Conversely, the international release will offer players the option to toggle dismemberment and decapitation via the in-game settings.
A CERO Z rating restricts sales and distribution to individuals aged 18 and older. CERO's rating system considers factors such as violence, sexual content, antisocial behavior, and language. Games failing to meet these standards are unrated and cannot be released in Japan. This isn't unprecedented for the Assassin's Creed franchise; many previous titles, including AC Valhalla and AC Origins, also received CERO Z ratings.
The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space Remake faced similar challenges, ultimately forgoing a Japanese release due to the extensive modifications demanded by CERO. These decisions highlight the ongoing tension between developers' creative visions and Japan's stringent content regulations.
Yasuke's Description Altered
Further changes involve the description of Yasuke, a key protagonist. Steam and PlayStation store listings in Japanese have replaced the term "samurai" (侍) with "騎当千" (Ikki tousen), meaning "a warrior who can face a thousand enemies." This follows previous criticism regarding the character's description as "the black samurai," a point of historical contention in Japan. Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot, previously stated the company's priority is entertainment for a broad audience, and not to promote specific agendas. This aligns with their past use of historical figures in the series.
Release Date
Assassin's Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on March 20, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Further details can be found on the official Assassin's Creed Shadows page.
