Hyper Light Breaker offers players a diverse range of characters, known as Breakers, each with unique playstyles to combat the formidable Abyss King. Unlocking new characters in this roguelike is straightforward, yet the game doesn't explicitly guide players on how to do so. Below is a comprehensive guide detailing the characters available and how to unlock them in the early access version of Hyper Light Breaker.
This guide is specific to the early access version, which currently features two unlockable characters. We will update this guide as more Breakers become available.
How to Get New Characters in Hyper Light Breaker
To unlock new characters, players must collect Abyss Stones, which are exclusively dropped by the Crowns, the game's bosses. Before challenging these bosses, players need to acquire Prisms, which serve as keys to the boss arenas. These can be located on the map by following the golden diamond icon.
After defeating a boss, return to the teleporter at the Cursed Outpost and select the Breaker you wish to unlock. Use your Abyss Stones to unlock the character, making them playable. While there are nine characters in total, only two can be unlocked at the moment by collecting Abyss Stones. The unlocking method for the remaining characters is yet to be revealed.
All Characters in Hyper Light Breaker
Each character in Hyper Light Breaker starts with a SyCom, a pivotal item that sets their base stats and core perk, shaping their playstyle. Here's a detailed look at each character and their unique playstyles.
Vermillion
Vermillion is the starting character equipped with the Gunslinger SyCom, which enhances his ranged combat capabilities. His Rail shots have a chance to crit, and if they do, the next shot is guaranteed to crit as well.
For players favoring melee combat, Vermillion can unlock the Tank SyCom, which boosts armor upon perfect parries and provides better defensive and melee stats, making it a more secure choice.
Lapis
Lapis, like Vermillion, focuses on Rail-based combat with her Lightweaver SyCom, which increases Rail shot damage after collecting a Battery. Her distinguishing feature is the Warrior SyCom, which enhances her core stats with each upgrade.
Lapis can become exceptionally powerful with either SyCom, but the Warrior SyCom significantly boosts her stats over time, making her a formidable force in battle.
Goro
Goro is tailored for ranged combat, starting with the Astrologer SyCom, which accelerates his Blade skill charge while shooting. His unlockable Sniper SyCom further increases his critical hit rate.
While Goro excels in dealing high damage, his lack of defensive options categorizes him as a ranged glass cannon. Mastering his playstyle can lead to significant success on the battlefield.
