Top 10 LitRPG Books to Read in 2025

Author : Henry Update:May 05,2025

Reading is my all-time favorite hobby. I enjoy playing video games and watching TV, but nothing quite matches the immersive experience of diving deep into a captivating book series. My love for reading began with the Harry Potter books, which led me to explore genres like sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and non-fiction. However, it was the LitRPG genre that truly captured my heart and transformed my reading habits. Since discovering LitRPG, I've become completely absorbed by it, and now it's the only type of reading I pursue. If you're curious about LitRPG and want to explore this genre with me, here are my top recommendations that I believe anyone would enjoy.

23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleOne of the great benefits of the books listed here is that they are all available through a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Given the extensive nature of some of these series, I highly recommend subscribing to save money each month. Additionally, these books are accessible via an Audible subscription for those who prefer listening over reading.

What Is LitRPG?

For newcomers to the genre, LitRPG stands for literary role-playing game. This genre blends traditional storytelling with elements typically found in role-playing video games. While some stories might involve characters being transported into a game world, the genre is much broader. All LitRPG books incorporate game-like elements, such as leveling systems and power hierarchies, which the protagonist navigates and overcomes through experience. My recommendations include a mix of progression fantasy and traditional LitRPG, both of which provide a compelling reading experience.

  1. He Who Fights with Monsters

Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters

95Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"He Who Fights with Monsters" is an exhilarating, action-packed series with some of the most memorable lines I've encountered. The unique leveling system and vibrant characters make it a must-read for fans of fantasy comedy. This is my top favorite LitRPG series, and each new installment maintains the quality of the first.

The story follows Jason Asano, who awakens in a hedge maze in a magical world, sporting new powers and no hair. His quirky yet determined approach to his bizarre situation helps him navigate challenges ranging from cannibals to monsters, and even complex personal relationships. The series, penned by Shirtaloon, is currently on its 11th book, with more on the way.

  1. The Path of Ascension

### The Path of Ascension

33Book 1 of 8.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"The Path of Ascension" diverges from the typical LitRPG narrative by not involving a character being pulled into another world. Instead, it presents a richly detailed universe centered around magical dungeon portals called rifts and powerful immortals with unique talents.

The protagonist, Matt, is an orphan driven by the dream of diving into rifts to battle the monsters that killed his parents. However, his dreams are shattered when he receives a detrimental Tier 1 talent. Through hard work and determination, Matt strives to overcome his limitations. The series truly shines with the character development in books two and three, cementing its place among my favorites.

  1. Dungeon Crawler Carl

### Dungeon Crawler Carl

74Book 1 of 7.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"Dungeon Crawler Carl" delivers a relentless, fast-paced adventure. The protagonist, Carl, breaks from traditional tropes, and his companion, the cat named Princess Donut, might just steal the show as the true star of the series.

The story begins when Carl finds himself trapped with his ex-girlfriend's cat as the world ends. They are thrust into an underground dungeon that serves as a stage for an intergalactic game show, managed by advanced races and a chaotic AI. With its blend of humor, action, and skill progression, this series captivates from start to finish. The seventh book, released in 2024, maintains the excitement of the first. Matt Dinniman, the author, also has other engaging works worth exploring.

  1. Unsouled (Cradle Series)

### Unsouled (Cradle Series)

32Book 1 of 12.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleSimilar to "The Path of Ascension," the Cradle series immerses readers in a well-developed world without transporting the protagonist to another universe. It features a unique power cultivation system and a likable main character, making "Unsouled" an excellent choice for fantasy lovers who may not be fully committed to traditional LitRPG.

The series follows Lindon, born as an "Unsouled" with seemingly no potential in the sacred arts of his village. Despite his intelligence and determination, he faces the prospect of remaining powerless. However, divine intervention offers him a chance to forge his path.

With 12 books culminating in a satisfying conclusion, the Cradle series is a must-read. Will Wight's other works are also highly recommended for their quality.

  1. Beware of Chicken

### Beware of Chicken

30Book 1 of 4.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"Beware of Chicken" stands out with its unconventional approach. Unlike the action-heavy entries on this list, this series focuses on a cultivator named Jin Rou, who abandons his quest for power to embrace the life of a farmer.

After dying, Jin Rou's consciousness is overtaken by someone from Earth. Deciding the world of powerful cultivators isn't for him, the new Jin Rou seeks a peaceful life, finding friendship, family, and unexpected sources of power along the way. This series offers a relaxing yet fulfilling LitRPG experience.

  1. Defiance of the Fall

### Defiance of the Fall

36Book 1 of 15.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"Defiance of the Fall" is the longest series on my list, offering a rewarding long-term commitment. It kicks off with a gripping start and maintains its momentum as the protagonist faces new challenges.

The story centers on Zachary Atwood, who finds himself alone when the world integrates into the multiverse. Confronted by a new "System" with quests and notifications, Zac must survive an alien invasion using just a hatchet and his wits. As he journeys to reunite with his family, he uncovers the secrets of the multiverse.

With 14 books released and a 15th on the way, "Defiance of the Fall" explores a complex leveling system and skill progression that keeps readers engaged throughout.

  1. Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

### Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

30Book 1 of 5.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Arcane Ascension series offers a unique twist by forgoing traditional stat sheets and leveling systems. Instead, it introduces readers to a world governed by god-like beings who grant "attunements" to those who survive their dungeon-like spires. The intricate magic system is both fascinating and rewarding to explore alongside the enthusiastic protagonist.

The narrative follows Corin Cadence, who enters the Serpent Spire to earn his attunement after his brother's disappearance within. His journey raises more questions, which he seeks to answer with the help of friends he meets at Lorian Heights Academy.

"Sufficiently Advanced Magic" was my gateway into LitRPG, offering a Harry Potter-esque magic school setting within a rich fantasy world. Andrew Rowe's companion series further enrich the main storyline and are well worth reading.

  1. The Grand Game

### The Grand Game

15Book 1 of 9.See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleFor fans of stealth games, "The Grand Game" provides a thrilling entry into the LitRPG genre. The protagonist, Michael, finds himself in the Forever Kingdom with no memories beyond his name. He must navigate a dungeon filled with monsters, learning to fight and advance his skills while uncovering the world's secrets and his place within it.

This series offers a fresh perspective on the genre. Although currently consisting of seven books, both the eighth and ninth are available for preorder, promising more exciting adventures.

  1. The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

### The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

30Book 1 of 11.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible"The Completionist Chronicles" is an excellent starting point for those new to LitRPG. It incorporates familiar RPG elements with unique twists that keep readers engaged.

The series follows Joe, an ex-military medic now confined to a wheelchair, who seizes the chance to immerse himself in a new virtual MMORPG. Inside the game, he adopts the secret class of a Ritualist, using his unique situation and skill set to level his magic and skills through quests.

The series expands into different worlds in later books, making for an exciting and fun read throughout.

  1. Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

23See it at AmazonSee it at AudibleThe Underworld series takes a slower, more deliberate approach. Unlike the magical worlds of other series, "Level Up or Die" is set in the literal underworld.

The protagonist, Elorian, is an average high-school gamer who finds himself trapped in the underworld with other players. Despite receiving magical powers and the ability to level up, the group is far from happy about their situation. An ancient succubus uses them to drain their power as they navigate dungeons beneath the Earth's crust. Filled with vampires, dragons, demons, and giant lava cats, this series offers a rich adventure and is a great introduction to LitRPG.
