Marmalade Game Studio has launched the Heart of Africa expansion for Ticket to Ride. This marks the second physical board map, following the Japan expansion, to debut in a digital format. Chosen by community vote, this map was a highly anticipated addition among players.
What the Heart of Africa Expansion Adds to Ticket to Ride
Heart of Africa introduces Terrain cards, tied to the routes crossing the map's diverse landscapes. When used strategically, these cards can double the points earned for a completed route.
There are three types of Terrain cards, each corresponding to specific route colors. Desert and Savanna cards apply to yellow, orange, and red routes. Jungle and Forest cards work with purple, blue, and green routes. Mountain and Cliff cards are for white, gray, and black routes.
Claiming a short route of one to three train lengths requires only one Terrain card to activate the bonus. For longer routes of four to six lengths, two cards are needed. However, you can only use these cards if you hold at least as many of that specific type as any other player.
As with other expansions, Heart of Africa also adds two new characters: festival organizer Blessing Kipruto and griot Nnamdi Okpara. Two new vehicles are included: the Fahagola railbus and the Safari Sights car. Finally, players get two new carriages: Animal Trails and Stately Travels.
