Back in February, I asked Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick how confident he was about hitting Grand Theft Auto 6's original Fall 2025 release window. He responded that he felt "really good about it." Three months later—perhaps unsurprisingly—GTA 6 was postponed to May 26, 2026.
What shifted during those few months? That's precisely what I asked Zelnick in a follow-up interview tied to Take-Two’s latest financial report. He explained that as development progressed, the requirement for additional polish became increasingly apparent.
"As we approach the final stages of a title that strives for perfection, the necessity—or lack thereof—for continued refinement becomes clearer," Zelnick stated. "In this instance, we identified an opportunity where a small incremental delay would help Rockstar Games fully realize its creative vision without compromise. Naturally, I supported that decision."
While pushing GTA 6 beyond Take-Two’s current fiscal year impacts short-term financial performance, Zelnick expressed strong confidence in the company’s upcoming lineup. This includes Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, Hangar 13’s Mafia: The Old Country, and new entries in the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series.
"From my current standpoint, I feel very optimistic about Fiscal Year 2026," he remarked. "Though delays are never ideal—how could they be?—the most crucial thing is to empower our teams in their pursuit of excellence."

The natural next question mirrored what I asked Zelnick in February: How confident are you that Rockstar will meet the May 26, 2026 release date? This time, Zelnick sounded even more resolute:
"Historically, when we commit to a specific launch date, we’ve consistently delivered on it."
To me, that strongly implies GTA 6 won’t face further delays—without explicitly stating it. While nothing is guaranteed, now that the game has an official release date, another postponement would come as a major surprise.
The release of GTA 6’s second trailer, along with Rockstar’s accompanying details, has sparked widespread speculation about what to expect from what will undoubtedly become the biggest video game of all time. Some fans even speculate that Liberty City might appear in GTA 6, either at launch or as downloadable content later on.
