Author : Nova Update:Feb 11,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind cherished memories. I'm feeling a bit wiser, and grateful for sharing this journey with you all. As autumn arrives, I want to express my appreciation – you're the best gaming companions anyone could ask for! Today's update is packed with reviews, new releases, and exciting sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at classic titles, and the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is a prime example. This compilation features Miles Edgeworth's two adventures, finally bringing the previously unlocalized title to English-speaking audiences. This series excels at weaving together plotlines from previous installments, and the second Investigations game masterfully builds upon the first. It's a sequel that enhances the original, a truly rewarding experience.

The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain similar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, solving cases – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flavor. The pacing might feel less structured than typical Ace Attorney games, occasionally leading to lengthy cases, but fans of the main series will undoubtedly enjoy this spin-off. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better and provides context for the first.

Bonus features rival those of the Apollo Justice set. A gallery showcases art and music, a story mode allows for relaxed gameplay, and players can toggle between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialogue history feature is also included.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling contrast between its two games, making for a fantastic overall experience. The localization of the second game is a significant achievement, and the additional features enhance the package. With this release, every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed the other titles, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising development! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful follow-up to the obscure NES classic maintains the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels provide a demanding experience, although an easier mode is now available. The core gameplay remains familiar, with the protagonist's star serving as a versatile tool. Collectibles add replayability, offering customization options.

The game's length is comparable to the original, offering a tough but rewarding challenge. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain a positive atmosphere, but don't underestimate the difficulty. Mastering platforming skills and utilizing the star effectively are crucial for progress.

Gimmick! 2 is a surprisingly excellent sequel, successfully building upon the original while maintaining its own identity. Fans of the first game will be delighted, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned – it's as demanding as its predecessor, even with the easier mode.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it works well, although performance on the Switch can be occasionally hampered by the system's limitations. Despite this, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals remain engaging.

The weapon system adds depth to the gameplay. The main gun depletes energy, requiring the use of a melee weapon to recharge. A rotating third weapon adds further strategic options. Mastering the weapon management and dash maneuver is essential for survival.

While different from its predecessor, Valfaris: Mecha Therion retains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids many genre clichés. While other platforms may offer better performance, the Switch version delivers a satisfying experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in fan service, offering a solid presentation, good writing, and meta-systems that reward dedicated players. However, the limited number of mini-games and repetitive gameplay might leave non-fans wanting more.

The mini-games lack depth, and the narrative will only resonate with those familiar with the Umamusume universe. Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service might outweigh the overall gameplay experience. While the visuals, sound, and world are well-executed, the limited content might lead to quick burnout.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash successfully captures the essence of the source material, but falls short in providing a compelling experience for non-fans. The unlockable content might keep dedicated fans engaged, but the limited and repetitive gameplay hinders its overall appeal.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit titles. Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola are presented with modern conveniences such as save states, rewind, display options, and a gallery. The full localization of these games is a noteworthy achievement.

The games themselves offer a mixed bag. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island is a solid adventure game. The Wing of Madoola is the most ambitious but also the most inconsistent. While not top-tier NES titles, they offer a unique charm and historical significance.

Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of these games and their official English release make this a worthwhile purchase.
