Scheduled to launch on September 26, Marvel's Spider-Man will mark the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic's Universes Beyond series, following the Final Fantasy set, and the third overall after the 2023 Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set. Although there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the cards featured in the Scene Box above are specifically designed for Commander and won't be Standard-legal.
While the Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and more marked Magic's initial foray into the Marvel universe last year, Spider-Man represents the first full set inspired by the comics. According to Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall, a full set was necessary to fully explore the Spider-Man universe. "Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he’s come across over the years," McCall explains. "Selecting characters from the Spider-Man canon for a broader set would mean leaving out too many iconic figures. We could have included Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-specific set, but there wouldn’t have been room for Aunt May."
McCall also highlighted the unique approach to designing a Universes Beyond set, saying, "It flips the worldbuilding on its head." Unlike traditional Magic sets, which need to establish a setting and be engaging to attract players, a set featuring a well-known character like Spider-Man can delve into mechanical complexity because fans already understand the underlying story. "When we create a card that embodies great power and great responsibility, we can add more complexity because players are familiar with the narrative. We don’t have to simplify Universes Beyond cards; we just need to highlight recognizable moments that fans can easily connect with."
Head Designer Mark Rosewater elaborated on how they translate these iconic moments into Magic's gameplay, noting that the game's color pie allows for a versatile representation of heroism and villainy. "Spider-Man's sense of obligation to use his power for the greater good fits perfectly into the white color pie," Rosewater explains. "His origin as a result of science, along with his inventions like web-slingers, aligns with the blue color pie. Lastly, his animal-based powers and the destiny tied to spiders and the Spider-Man universe resonate with the green color pie."
In addition to the Scene Box, the set will include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all of which are detailed in the gallery above. While there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the set will feature the return of Welcome Decks. These are themed introductory decks typically distributed for free by game stores, offering a low-pressure way for new players to learn the game.
Alongside this year's Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast recently announced a set inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender. Additionally, two more in-universe sets are slated for release before that: Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
