Robert Eggers, acclaimed for his gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct a sequel to the cherished classic, Labyrinth. According to Variety, Eggers will not only direct but also co-write the screenplay with his collaborator from The Northman, Sjón. This new project follows a previous attempt at a sequel that had Scott Derrickson, known for Sinister, attached but saw no progress since 2023. TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have now entrusted Eggers to bring a fresh vision to the world of Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy, which originally starred David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth and Jennifer Connelly as the protagonist on a quest to rescue her baby brother from a fantastical realm filled with Henson's iconic puppets.
In addition to the Labyrinth sequel, Eggers is also working on a werewolf movie titled Werwulf, slated for a Christmas 2026 release. Set in 13th century England, the film will feature dialogue in Old English, promising a unique historical horror experience where, presumably, a transformation into a wolf monster will play a central role.
Eggers' recent release, Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 silent film by F.W. Murnau, hit theaters last Christmas. Set in 19th century Germany, the film follows a young real estate agent's harrowing journey to Transylvania to sell a castle to a mysterious count, leading to terrifying vampiric nightmares that engulf his life and that of his wife, Ellen. Nosferatu has garnered significant acclaim, earning four Oscar nominations for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
