After a nearly decade-long absence, Professor Layton is returning, and we have Nintendo to thank. At Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, LEVEL-5, the game's developer, revealed details about the development of Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.
In a conversation with Yuji Horii (creator of the Dragon Quest series), LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino shared that while Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy felt like a satisfying conclusion, Nintendo ("Company ‘N’") encouraged them to revisit the steampunk world of Professor Layton.
According to AUTOMATON, Hino stated that the series had concluded, but a significant push from Nintendo prompted the creation of a new game. Nintendo's desire to see a new entry is understandable, given the franchise's success on Nintendo DS and 3DS. Nintendo not only published many Professor Layton titles but also considers it a flagship DS exclusive.
Hino explained that Nintendo's encouragement led him to believe a new game would allow fans to experience the series with the enhanced quality of modern consoles.
A Glimpse into Professor Layton and the New World of Steam
Set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam reunites Professor Layton and Luke Triton in Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered by steam technology. They'll tackle a new mystery involving Gunman King Joe, a legendary gunslinger.
The game retains the series' signature brain-teasing puzzles, this time enhanced with the expertise of QuizKnock, a renowned puzzle-creation team. This collaboration is especially exciting for fans, following the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey, which featured Layton's daughter.
