Star Wars fans are in for a treat as the saga continues beyond The Rise of Skywalker, but not through Shawn Levy's much-anticipated film Star Wars: Starfighter—at least, not yet. Instead, fans will soon dive into the Star Wars universe post-2019 film with the release of a new young adult novel titled Star Wars: The Last Order.
Announced via Penguin Random House’s website, Star Wars: The Last Order promises a deeper look into the lives of John Boyega’s cherished hero Finn and Naomi Ackie’s resistance ally Jannah from Rise of Skywalker. Penned by Kwame Mbalia, the official synopsis teases an engaging plot:
“Following the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime.”
This novel marks the first foray into the Star Wars universe post-Rise of Skywalker, setting the stage before Shawn Levy's project comes to fruition. While Levy's film remains eagerly awaited, Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm's head, provided insights into its timeline in a February interview with Deadline, stating, “It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.” Jonathan Tropper, the writer involved with the project, expressed his enthusiasm to Screen Rant last month, hinting at a sooner-than-expected release. Subsequently, at Star Wars Celebration Japan, the film's release date was confirmed for May 28, 2027, with Ryan Gosling set to star.
