The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, has been fully unveiled and pre-orders have begun. However, seasoned collectors won't be surprised to hear that the launch has been tumultuous, with scalpers and store issues already creating challenges for fans eager to get their hands on this new set.
Officially revealed on March 24, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals is set to launch on May 30, 2025. Several factors contribute to its high demand. Notably, it marks the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, a beloved archetype for those who remember classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards creatively integrate iconic Trainers with their Pokémon, adding a unique layer of nostalgia and excitement. Moreover, Destined Rivals centers around Team Rocket, the notorious villains from Pokémon's first generation, which further fuels anticipation for the set. Much like the earlier Prismatic Evolutions set with its Eevee-lutions, Destined Rivals is poised to be a fan-favorite.

When pre-orders opened, frustration was inevitable. Fans attempting to purchase the Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box (ETB), a popular choice for those looking to dive into the set, faced significant challenges accessing the website. As expected, scalpers swiftly listed their pre-orders on platforms like eBay, with prices soaring to several hundred dollars for a box that typically retails for $54.99. Joe Merrick from Serebii shared his experience of waiting hours in queue only to face the same issue, expressing his frustration and disappointment with the situation.
"I truly hate this," Merrick stated. "The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."
Unfortunately, this is a recurring problem. Previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 also faced similar shortages and quick sell-outs. The Pokémon Company (TPC) has acknowledged the issue in an online FAQ, promising more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB later this year, according to PokéBeach.
Adding to the frustration, some buyers have reported cancellations of their ETB orders. The high demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are undeniable, but these issues are overshadowing the enjoyment of the hobby for many who simply want to open packs and play the game.
While Pokémon TCG Pocket provides a digital alternative to the physical scarcity, the challenges remain for those who prefer the tangible experience. A visit to your local store's card aisle might reveal the difficulty of finding packs during these highly anticipated releases. It's particularly frustrating when these sets are as exciting as Destined Rivals. Hopefully, solutions will emerge soon to address these ongoing issues.
