The Burning Monolith: A Path of Exile 2 Endgame Challenge
The Burning Monolith, a unique map location in Path of Exile 2's Atlas of Worlds, resembles a Realmgate but presents a significantly greater challenge. Accessing it requires three Crisis Fragments, each obtained by conquering a Citadel – exceptionally rare and difficult map nodes.
Accessing the Burning Monolith
The Burning Monolith is the lair of the Arbiter of Ash, the game's most formidable pinnacle boss. Your first attempt to activate the Monolith's door initiates "The Pinnacle of Flame" quest, comprising three sub-quests: Ezomyte Infiltration (Iron Citadel), Faridun Foray (Copper Citadel), and Vaal Incursion (Stone Citadel). Successfully completing these Citadels yields the three necessary Crisis Fragments. Combine them at the Monolith's altar to unlock the Arbiter of Ash encounter. Prepare a powerful build; this boss boasts devastating attacks and immense health.
Locating the Citadels
Three Citadels exist: Iron, Copper, and Stone, each guarded by a unique boss. The Crisis Fragment is the reward for defeating each Citadel boss. Their rarity is the primary obstacle.
Citadels are one-time attempts. Their location on each player's randomly generated Atlas is unpredictable. Community observations suggest these strategies:
- Directional Progression: Choose a direction on the Atlas and explore systematically until a Citadel is found. Unlock Towers for improved map visibility.
- Corruption Tracking: Focus on corrupted nodes at the Atlas's edges. Clear these nodes, unlock nearby Towers, and repeat. Combine this with the first strategy.
- Clustered Appearance: Citadels may appear in close proximity. Finding one increases the likelihood of finding others nearby.
Citadel hunting is a late-game activity, best undertaken with a fully optimized build.
Alternatively, Crisis Fragments can be purchased on trading websites or through the Currency Exchange, although their rarity often commands a high price. This cost may be justifiable to avoid the extensive Citadel hunt.
