In a surprising move, Sony has officially announced the discontinuation of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, just under three years after its initial launch. As of today, the program no longer welcomes new members, and those who decide to cancel their membership will not be able to rejoin in the future. Upon cancellation, all accumulated reward points will be permanently deleted.
Existing members, however, can continue earning points until July 23, 2025. Any remaining balance of points can be redeemed for rewards up until November 3, 2026, giving current participants ample time to make use of their accumulated benefits.
Despite the shutdown of the broader loyalty program, Sony confirmed that Digital Collectibles under the PlayStation Stars umbrella will remain accessible for the foreseeable future. That means you’ll still be able to admire your unique 3D digital collectibles — including fan favorites like the Jim Ryan bobblehead — without interruption.
In an official statement posted on the PlayStation blog, Grace Chen, vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise at PlayStation, explained the decision: “Since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings.”
At this time, Sony has not announced any direct replacement for PlayStation Stars, nor has it shared specific details regarding what insights were gathered during the program’s operation.

Launched in July 2022, PlayStation Stars was designed to reward PS5 owners with points that had real monetary value, earned through purchases made in the PlayStation Store, as well as by completing various in-app tasks such as surveys or trying out new games and system features.
The program was positioned as a direct competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox Rewards — and over time, both systems underwent changes that reduced their overall value to users. PlayStation Stars briefly suspended operations last summer due to service disruptions, and in October 2024, Sony introduced several modifications, including shortening the point expiration period from 24 months to 12 months and removing PlayStation Plus subscriptions from the list of eligible purchases for points. Now, the entire initiative is being phased out entirely.
