The PlayStation Portal, Sony’s handheld accessory for the PS5, resembles a DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen in the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains DualSense features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface that replaces the touchpad. The Portal supports streaming games even when you’re away from home, provided you have a highly stable, high-speed internet connection. Note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device—it requires a PS5 to function as a remote player.
You no longer need a PS5 to enjoy games on the PS Portal. Sony recently added a feature allowing users to stream games directly from the PlayStation Now cloud service, bypassing the need for a $500 console. Portal owners can connect to their PS5 or Sony’s cloud servers (with beta quality-of-life updates rolled out in April). Opting for cloud streaming grants access to over 120 titles, including Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. You’ll need a subscription to the top tier of PlayStation Plus, but $18 a month is far more affordable than buying every new game outright.
The PlayStation Portal isn’t the only way to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi at home. The PS Remote Play app, available on mobile devices and other handhelds like the Steam Deck, offers similar functionality. However, setup is more complex, and you may miss out on some DualSense features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy
"The PlayStation Portal exceeded my expectations, turning my initial skepticism into genuine appreciation. It offers a far superior experience compared to using a phone with an attached controller and performs remarkably well. I love the flexibility to play my PS5 from anywhere with reliable Wi-Fi, especially when the family TV is occupied with, ironically, a Nintendo Switch. Keep in mind that this device fully relies on a PlayStation 5 to operate. Its main limitations are the lack of support for Wi-Fi networks requiring browser-based login and the absence of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these drawbacks, it’s the best solution for PlayStation Remote Play currently available. If not for those issues, I’d say it’s an essential gadget for any PS5 owner who loves handheld gaming or shares a household TV."
