Sony, the PlayStation maker, has contributed $5 million to aid first responders, community recovery, and rebuilding initiatives in Southern California, which is currently battling devastating wildfires. The company's commitment also extends to assistance programs for those impacted by the ongoing crisis.
In a joint statement shared on X/Twitter, Kenichiro Yoshida (Chairman and CEO) and Hiroki Totoki (President and COO) emphasized Los Angeles's significance as Sony's entertainment hub for over 35 years. They pledged continued collaboration with local leaders to optimize Sony Group's support for relief and recovery efforts.
The wildfires, which began on January 7th, continue to wreak havoc across the Los Angeles area, even a week later. The BBC reports a tragic toll of 24 fatalities and 23 missing persons in the two largest affected zones. Firefighters are preparing for challenging conditions as stronger winds are anticipated.
Sony's generous donation joins contributions from other corporations, including Disney ($15 million), Netflix and Comcast ($10 million each), the NFL ($5 million), Walmart ($2.5 million), and Fox ($1 million), as reported by CNBC. These collective efforts underscore the widespread support for wildfire relief in the region.
