Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti vs. AMD RX 9070 XT: Battle of GPUs

Author : Connor Update:Apr 22,2025

While the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 sits comfortably at the top of the graphics card market, not everyone can afford its hefty $1,999+ price tag. Fortunately, you don't need to break the bank to enjoy 4K gaming. Both the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT offer more budget-friendly options that deliver a robust 4K gaming experience.

Although prices are currently high due to heightened demand and limited supply following their launch, the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT are the ideal choices for those seeking a high-end gaming experience without the premium cost.

Comparing graphics cards with different architectures can be complex. Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units serve similar purposes but aren't directly comparable in terms of quantity.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT features 64 RDNA 4 compute units, each with 64 shader units, totaling 4,096. Each compute unit also includes two AI Accelerators and one RT Accelerator, resulting in 128 and 64, respectively. It's paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, which is sufficient for modern games, though it may be challenged at 4K in the future.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti also comes with 16GB of VRAM, but it uses the newer GDDR7, which offers faster memory speeds on a 256-bit bus. It's equipped with 70 Streaming Multiprocessors, or Compute Units, with a total of 8,960 CUDA Cores. This is twice the number of Shader Units per Compute Unit, a feature Nvidia introduced with the RTX 3080. However, this doesn't necessarily translate to double the performance.

Despite the RTX 5070 Ti's superior specs on paper, its performance isn't significantly better than the RX 9070 XT. Both cards are excellent choices for 4K gaming and are among the top options for 1440p gaming.

During my review of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, I anticipated it would be close to the RTX 5070 Ti but lag in ray-traced games. However, it performed remarkably well in titles like Cyberpunk 2077, staying just a few frames behind the more expensive RTX 5070 Ti.

While the RTX 5070 Ti does outperform in some games, such as Total War: Warhammer 3, achieving 87fps at 4K compared to the 9070 XT's 76fps, the RX 9070 XT generally averaged 2% faster performance. This slight edge is significant, especially considering its 21% lower cost.

Choosing a graphics card today involves more than just hardware specs. Both Nvidia and AMD provide comprehensive software suites that enhance the capabilities of their GPUs.

The Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti stands out with its DLSS suite, including AI upscaling and Frame Generation. With DLSS 4, Nvidia introduces multi-frame generation, capable of generating three frames for each rendered frame, significantly boosting frame rates with a minor latency cost, mitigated by Nvidia Reflex. This feature is best used when you're already achieving at least 45fps, ideally over 60fps.

AMD also supports Frame Generation but only generates one interpolated frame per rendered frame. The significant update with the Radeon RX 9070 XT is FSR 4, which introduces AI upscaling for the first time on AMD GPUs. Unlike previous versions that used temporal upscaling, FSR 4 employs machine learning for a more accurate image, though it's not as fast as its predecessor. Keep in mind that this is AMD's first generation of AI upscaling, while Nvidia has been refining DLSS for seven years.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Price

GPU pricing is a contentious issue, with new generation cards often sold out and prices inflated. Both Nvidia and AMD set suggested retail prices, but retailers and third-party manufacturers can set their own prices. While it's uncertain what prices will be in the future, hopefully, they'll fall closer to MSRP as supply improves.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, priced at $599 at launch, is a stellar option for 4K gaming, especially when using the new FSR 4 AI upscaler. This price point recalls the days when flagship GPUs launched at more reasonable prices, before Nvidia's gradual price increases starting with the RTX 2080 Ti.

In contrast, the Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, with a base price of $749, is $150 more expensive despite performing similarly to the 9070 XT. The additional cost may be justified for some by features like Multi-Frame Generation, but it depends on your gaming needs and preferences.

Winner: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

The Winner Is… the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti are excellent for high-end 1440p and 4K gaming. However, the RX 9070 XT's ability to deliver comparable performance at a significantly lower price makes it the clear winner. As prices hopefully return to normal, the value proposition of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT becomes even more compelling.

For those building a gaming PC aimed at high-end 1440p or 4K gaming, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT stands out as the best choice, especially since multi-frame generation, a feature exclusive to Nvidia, isn't crucial for most users without high-refresh 4K monitors.
