The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal that the new console is significantly larger than its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con unhook themselves from the original Switch, we witness the tablet section grow and morph into its upgraded form. This substantial size increase suggests that Nintendo is moving further away from the pocket-friendly handhelds of its past, embracing the era of larger portable devices such as the Steam Deck and iPad.
But just how much bigger is the Switch 2 than its predecessor? While Nintendo has not officially provided exact size dimensions, we can make a rough estimate based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we went hands-on with a Switch 2 mock-up created by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify the accuracy at the time, Nintendo’s new trailer showcases a console that matches the mock-up down to the smallest details. This suggests that the measurements we took at CES are likely very close to the final dimensions of the Switch 2.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Our estimations indicate that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement is the diagonal of the display section of the tablet, excluding the bezels. The size aligns with a rumor reported early in 2024, suggesting the display will be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If these estimates are correct, the Switch 2's screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally and **66% larger in overall area** than the original console’s 6.2-inch LCD display. While a larger screen isn't always better, the Switch 2 could offer a visually appealing gaming experience, assuming the display technology is of high quality.
When compared to other handhelds, the Switch Lite's smaller 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen makes the Switch 2's display 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area. The Switch OLED, with its 7-inch display, is outclassed by the Switch 2, which is 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.
In the era of portable PCs, the Switch 2 faces competition from devices like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED, with their 7-inch and 7.4-inch displays respectively, have larger screens than any previous Switch console. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen surpasses even the Steam Deck OLED, being 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
The larger screen necessitates a bigger overall console. The original Switch already required sizable pockets, and the Switch 2 will likely only fit into cargo pants pockets or a bag.
Using the Genki mock-up, we measured the Switch 2 to be just over 10.5 inches from edge to edge, including Joy-Cons, and 4.5 inches from top to bottom. Through careful analysis and scaling images from the trailer to match our photos of the mock-up, we estimate the **Switch 2 to be approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**.
The original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall, meaning the **Switch 2 is about 25% larger** than its predecessor. It would also be around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).
While we couldn't obtain precise measurements of the depth, the Switch 2 appears to maintain the half-inch thickness of the original Switch. Thus, while the overall footprint is significantly larger, the thickness remains similar.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The transformation animation in the Switch 2 reveal trailer suggests that the Joy-Con controllers will retain a similar width to the original Switch but grow slightly taller. Using our scaled image methodology, we estimate the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**—the same width as the original controllers but 13mm taller to match the new console's size. This makes the **new Joy-Con approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
Subtracting the Joy-Con size from the overall console dimensions, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is about **31% larger than the original Switch** version, accommodating the 8-inch 16:9 screen with an approximate 11mm bezel on each side and an 8mm bezel along the top and bottom. These bezels are slimmer along the sides than the original Switch but similar to the existing console’s top and bottom bezels.
Please note that all these measurements are estimates based on our best efforts and may differ from Nintendo's official dimensions when released. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we are confident that these figures are in the right ballpark. We expect the Switch 2 to be roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get hands-on with it later this year.
