Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could have a surprising additional function: acting as computer mice. While the practicality of this mouse-like mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller experimentation.
The intriguing evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, known for uncovering Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed new findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "for game console handles." This terminology, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly suggests the Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer mouse functionality.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, implying they are new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, appears large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly. The legitimacy of this information, however, remains unconfirmed.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transformable into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement.
The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console evolution.
