Hori's Piranha Plant camera for the Nintendo Switch 2 offers a resolution of just 480p, significantly lower than the 1080p resolution of Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. The UK My Nintendo Store has officially confirmed these resolutions for both cameras:
- Nintendo Switch 2 Camera - Video capture quality: 1080p
- Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2 - Camera resolution: 640 × 480

Despite its lower resolution, the Piranha Plant camera, officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a more affordable price than Nintendo’s own $49.99 camera. Both cameras are set to be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. Additionally, the Switch 2 is compatible with any USB-C camera, expanding users' options.
The Piranha Plant camera boasts unique functionality. The part of the Piranha that houses the webcam can be detached from the pot, allowing users to position it directly on top of the Switch 2 for enhanced portability. This feature sets it apart from Nintendo's camera. Users can also close the plant's mouth to cover the lens, adding a fun and interactive element to the accessory.

Nintendo fans expressed shock and humor upon learning about the 480p resolution of the Piranha Plant camera. Social media reactions included comments like, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" from redditor Ramen536Pie, and "That’s actually hilarious," from LizardsoftheGhost. Another user, pokemonfitness1420, questioned, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"
During last week's Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the Switch 2's GameChat functionality, which is activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other play the same or different games and use a camera to see one another, enhanced by a built-in microphone that performs reliably across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is designed to be an all-in-one solution for multiplayer interaction, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online initiative in years.
