Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief yet notable experiment in narrative gaming. Despite boasting a robust player base, the decision to cancel Netflix Stories has left many surprised. So, what led to this decision? Let's delve deeper into the reasons behind the cancellation.
The news, initially reported by Variety, aligns with a strategic pivot at Netflix Games. The focus is shifting towards mobile titles, including party games, children's games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences that can be enjoyed on TV screens. This new direction suggests a move away from the narrative-driven interactive fiction that characterized Netflix Stories.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative force behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue their collaboration with Netflix on other projects, such as the much-anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Is Netflix Stories Shutting Down?
Despite facing its share of criticism, Netflix Stories consistently held a strong position among the top-played games on the Netflix platform. Recent data places it fourth in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, a ranking based on playtime rather than downloads.
As for the future of the series, Love Is Blind: NYC will be the final interactive title released under the Netflix Stories banner. Once its rollout concludes, no new games will be developed in this series. This announcement follows closely on the heels of teasers for the next game, The Love Contract, slated for an April 8th release. This game, unlike its predecessors, was not based on a Netflix IP but was an original romance narrative centered around an actress navigating a complex web of fame, scandal, and fake dating. Unfortunately, The Love Contract has been canceled.
Despite the cancellation, existing Netflix Stories games will remain accessible. Fans can continue to enjoy titles such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels for Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been canceled.
So, there you have it! If you're a fan of Netflix shows, be sure to check out the remaining Netflix Stories games on the Google Play Store.
