Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann has announced he will not be creatively involved in the upcoming third season of HBO's The Last of Us, choosing instead to dedicate his full attention to game development for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

In a statement shared on Naughty Dog's social media channels, Druckmann explained his decision:
"Making the difficult decision to step back from my creative role on HBO's The Last of Us was necessary. With Season 2 complete and before significant work begins on Season 3, this is the right moment for me to shift my complete focus back to Naughty Dog and our future projects. This includes writing and directing our next exciting game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, alongside my duties as Studio Head and Head of Creative.
"Co-creating this show has been a highlight of my career. It's been an honor to work alongside Craig Mazin, executive producing, directing, and writing for the past two seasons. I'm deeply grateful for the dedication and thoughtful approach the incredible cast and crew brought to adapting The Last of Us Part I and continuing with The Last of Us Part II."
Further reporting from The Ankler indicates that showrunner Craig Mazin will lead the writing for Season 3, following his collaboration with Druckmann on the first two seasons.
Druckmann's renewed focus on game development follows the reveal of Naughty Dog's next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, at The Game Awards in December 2024. While this appears to be his primary focus, it is not the studio's only project. Druckmann confirmed the existence of another, unannounced internal project where he serves "more in a producer role," allowing him to "mentor the other team, provide feedback, and act as the executive in the room."
Meanwhile, HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us has achieved phenomenal success. HBO reported that Season 2 experienced an "influx" of viewers, bringing the series' total global audience to over 90 million since the conclusion of Season 1. However, the network noted that lower viewership for the Season 2 finale was likely due to its Memorial Day weekend release.
Although Season 3 is confirmed to be in development, it may not conclude the series. Mazin has stated he believes a fourth season is essential, and the series composer recently mentioned on a podcast that there would be "at least two more seasons, no question." It remains unclear whether Druckmann would return in a creative capacity for a potential fourth season.
We awarded The Last of Us Season 1 a score of 9/10, praising it as "a stunning adaptation that will thrill newcomers and deeply satisfy fans of Joel and Ellie's journey." Season 2 received a slightly lower score of 7/10, described as "still a good season, but one that struggles as a sequel telling only half of a larger story."
