Kemco's latest mobile port, Metro Quester, developed by Thousand Games, promises an intriguing departure from their typical JRPG offerings. Set to launch on April 21st with pre-registration now open, this game introduces players to a post-apocalyptic future where they'll explore the dense dungeons of ancient metros and pre-apocalyptic ruins.
Whenever I write about Kemco, I find their games both invariably welcome and fairly predictable. Their JRPGs from Japan tend to be high-quality yet often hit those familiar high-fantasy and melodramatic notes. However, Metro Quester breaks from these conventions, offering a dungeon-crawling RPG with a unique twist. Instead of venturing into ruins from above ground, players find themselves trapped underground, navigating the ancient metro lines of a bygone era, reminiscent of Glukhovsky's works.
The game features character designs by Kazushi Hagiwara, renowned for his work on Bastard!! The Dark God of Destruction, ensuring a high-quality yet dark and gloomy world to explore. Metro Quester stands out in Kemco's catalogue with its blend of a dark atmosphere and retro top-down dungeon crawling. With 24 characters, 8 classes, customizable weapons, a comprehensive bestiary, and more, the game promises a rich and engaging experience.
While Metro Quester retains that familiar anime style, it's unlikely to be objectionable to most players. If you're seeking a fresh and intriguing addition to your JRPG collection, mark your calendar for April 21st when Metro Quester hits the storefronts.
