Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is spearheading efforts to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, confirming his pursuit of securing the film rights and bringing the project to fruition. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," he stated.
The adaptation, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Recently, Yen confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, only to see the project fall apart due to the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, the success of his efforts in securing the rights or otherwise moving the project forward remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen's undercover operation within a formidable Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed, earning an 8/10 rating from IGN, the game, despite its success, never received sequels. Liu's involvement could change that.
