Marvel Rivals: An Ambitious Hero Release Schedule
Marvel Rivals, NetEase's hit third-person hero shooter, launched in December 2024 with 33 playable characters and has already amassed a remarkable 20 million players in its first month. The game's success continues with Season 1, featuring a rapid-fire release of new heroes.
The game's ambitious plan? A new hero approximately every 45 days, resulting in eight new additions annually. This surpasses competitors like Overwatch 2, which typically releases three new heroes per year. The Fantastic Four are the first post-launch additions, with Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman already available, and The Thing and Human Torch anticipated later in Season 1. Season 1 also includes two new New York City maps.
Marvel Rivals' Game Director, Guangyun Chen, confirmed this aggressive release schedule in an interview with Metro. Each three-month season will see two new heroes, one per half-season.
While NetEase has a vast roster of Marvel characters to choose from – even including less mainstream choices – the rapid release pace raises concerns. Thorough testing and balancing are crucial with 37 heroes and approximately 100 abilities already in the game. The potential for ability innovation depletion and the sheer time commitment required for each new hero are significant challenges. Many gamers question the feasibility of maintaining this pace unless NetEase has a substantial reserve of pre-developed heroes.
For now, players can anticipate the arrival of the remaining Fantastic Four members as Season 1 progresses. Additional surprises, such as new maps or in-game events, are also possible in the second half of Season 1. Fans should stay tuned to Marvel Rivals' social media for updates.
