Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. The studio has implemented a media blackout, indicating a significant period of silence regarding their future endeavors.
While Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a subsequent statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to their new title. Vincke's tweet expressed nostalgia for the journey with Baldur's Gate 3, but emphasized that the studio's story isn't over.
The upcoming project is confirmed to be neither a Baldur's Gate sequel nor another D&D-based game. Instead, it represents a completely new intellectual property, a departure Larian chose after internal discussions revealed a lack of enthusiasm for a direct Baldur's Gate follow-up.
Previous statements by Vincke offer limited clues. In November 2023, he hinted at the game's boundary-pushing nature. Earlier, in July 2023, he acknowledged the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, but emphasized the need for a creative refresh after the intensive development of Baldur's Gate 3.
Given Larian's established expertise in fantasy RPGs, speculation abounds about the nature of their next game. A shift to science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a different genre entirely remains a possibility. However, significant time—potentially years—may pass before any concrete details are revealed.
