In the sprawling world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a daunting task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if you lack the keys, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details how to hotwire a car and level up the necessary skills.
Hotwiring a car in Project Zomboid is surprisingly simple, requiring only a few button presses. However, prerequisites exist. While not requiring a top-tier build, you'll need specific skills or a chosen profession.
Hotwiring Mechanics
Successfully hotwiring allows you to drive any functioning vehicle, regardless of possessing the keys. But first, you'll need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar profession during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
Once the requirements are met, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. The hotwiring process is automatic; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel is not guaranteed, so acquiring gas is advisable.
Skill Leveling:
For those not starting as a Burglar, manual skill increases are possible. Gain XP through:
- Electrical: Dismantling electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Removing and reinstalling mechanical parts.
Books and magazines found in homes, businesses, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves also provide skill boosts. Administrators of Project Zomboid servers can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant players skill XP.
Remember to use a screwdriver or appropriate tool for dismantling/installation. Right-click on vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" for part removal.
