Six years. That's how long fans have waited for Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece. Through numerous game showcases and even a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 release (courtesy of Microsoft), Silksong has remained elusive. The Game Awards came and went without a peep, leaving fans yearning for news. Could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the moment?
The internet thinks so, and it all started with a cake.
Sharp-eyed sleuths on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake on January 15th, accompanied by the cryptic tweet: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was uncanny. Nintendo did announce the Switch 2 that day, leaving many questions unanswered. Was Pellen subtly hinting at the reveal? If so, why?
This is where things get interesting. Fans reverse-image-searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit, published April 2nd, 2024. The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. The theory? Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake tweet.
The speculation doesn't end there. Fans are dissecting Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. One compelling theory points to the 15-character limit mirroring the handle's length, suggesting "wr" might be the start of a word, possibly related to the "Druid of the Moss Temple," a Silksong NPC.
Adding to the mystery, Pellen adopted a new name: little bomey. While "Little Boomey" resembles a Southern Australian wine (Team Cherry's location), the slight spelling difference fuels further speculation.
It's important to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement listed Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch as launch platforms. Six years later, has Nintendo secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps even a timed exclusive? Or is this all just fervent fans grasping at straws?
We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, explore the announcements from Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
