After more than a decade of passionate requests from the community, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is finally introducing subclasses—a transformative update that reshapes character progression. This long-awaited feature was officially unveiled during the ESO Direct 2025 on April 10, marking a major milestone in the game’s 10th-anniversary celebration. Discover how this system works and what’s coming next for the beloved MMORPG.
Elder Scrolls Online Direct 2025: Major Updates Revealed
Over 3,000 Possible Skill Line Combinations

For years, players have expressed frustration at having to create new characters just to access newly introduced skill lines. Now, that changes with the arrival of the subclass system. This update allows players to retain core elements of their current class while expanding their build diversity—without starting over.
To unlock subclassing, players must reach level 50. Once eligible, they can keep one skill line from their base class and replace two others with skill lines from any of the six available classes. With this flexibility, the number of potential build combinations exceeds 3,000, empowering players to craft truly unique playstyles tailored to their preferences.
Rich Lambert, ESO Game Director, shared that the development team has conducted extensive balance testing. While the update may lead to higher power levels across the board, the team is confident in the current state, stating they’re “fine with where it is.”
Seasons of the Worm Cult: A New Era of Content

In addition to subclassing, ZeniMax Online Studios is shifting to a seasonal content model, allowing for more dynamic storytelling and faster response to player feedback. Studio Director Matt Firor explained that this new cadence gives the team greater creative freedom to experiment with gameplay systems and narrative structures.
The first major season, Seasons of the Worm Cult, is a long-awaited continuation of the original Molag Bal storyline that began 10 years ago. This chapter introduces the Isle of Solstice, a brand-new zone where players will investigate the mysterious return of the fanatical Worm Cult.
Producer Susan Kath noted that while Seasons of the Worm Cult will span most of 2025, future seasons are expected to last between 3 to 6 months. The team also teased upcoming "remix" seasons that revisit classic story arcs, including a highly anticipated Dark Brotherhood-themed season.
