Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor
The upcoming release of Dynasty Warriors: Origins on January 17, 2025, marks a significant moment for the franchise, born from the ashes of its predecessor, the canceled Dynasty Warriors 10. This decision, driven by technological advancements, ultimately shaped Origins into a more modern and strategically rich experience.
The game retains the series' hallmark free-roaming hack-and-slash combat, set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms Era. Players assume the role of an amnesiac protagonist, interacting with iconic historical figures. However, the path to Origins wasn't straightforward.
Omega Force, the development studio, recently revealed the cancellation of a planned tenth mainline installment. According to producer Masamichi Oba, in an interview translated by SiliconEra, this "phantom title" was envisioned as a stage-clearing game similar to Dynasty Warriors 7 (2011), a stark contrast to the final Origins design.
Technological Leap Fuels Creative Shift
Producer Tomohiko Sho attributed the cancellation to the transformative power of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. Witnessing the potential of modern hardware, the team opted for a strategic shift, incorporating elements from both the canceled project and previous games.
Oba highlighted the integration of free-roaming exploration, a feature initially planned for the canceled Dynasty Warriors 10, and a more in-depth narrative focusing on the Three Kingdoms Era's rich history. While abandoning the previous project was challenging, the team successfully salvaged and refined key features, resulting in the Dynasty Warriors: Origins experience players will soon enjoy.
