Corinne Busche, director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is reportedly departing from BioWare, an EA subsidiary.
Eurogamer reports Busche's departure, expected in the coming weeks, following her tenure as game director from February 2022 until the game's launch last October. EA has yet to comment.
The Veilguard's commercial performance has been a subject of speculation since its release. While Eurogamer states Busche's exit is unrelated to the game's success, EA's official stance on sales figures remains pending, with Q3 2025 financial results expected February 4th. The company has also confirmed no DLC is planned for The Veilguard.
BioWare's focus has shifted to Mass Effect 5, a project previously hinted at but not yet fully unveiled. This follows August 2023 layoffs affecting approximately 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby. These cuts coincided with EA's internal restructuring and the outsourcing of Star Wars: The Old Republic, ostensibly to allow BioWare to concentrate on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The Dragon Age franchise's journey has been turbulent. The initial reveal trailer for The Veilguard (formerly Dreadwolf) received negative feedback, prompting a rapid release of gameplay footage to appease fans. Despite initial concerns, later impressions were generally positive.
The future of the Dragon Age franchise remains uncertain, leaving fans questioning whether BioWare will be given the opportunity to develop a sequel to The Veilguard.
