Sid Meier's acclaimed *Civilization* series enters a new era with *Civilization VII*. Available across major gaming platforms, a key question is whether cross-play and cross-progression are supported. Let's dive in.
Does Civilization VII Have Cross-Play?

The answer is yes, but with important nuances. Cross-play requires a linked 2K account. However, compatibility varies depending on the platforms involved.
On PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, cross-play generally functions seamlessly, offering access to all standard maps and player counts across historical eras.
The exception is the Nintendo Switch. Due to hardware limitations, the Switch version supports smaller map sizes and fewer players in certain eras than other platforms. Specifically, the Switch cannot handle standard or larger map sizes. Multiplayer limits are four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, and six players in the Modern Age.
In short: Cross-play is largely smooth, but if a Switch player joins, those limitations apply to the entire match. This doesn't diminish the Switch experience, but awareness of these limitations is key, especially in online multiplayer.
Does Civilization VII Have Cross-Progression?

Unlike cross-play, cross-progression in Civilization VII is straightforward, provided you have an active 2K account. Your progress is synced across all linked platforms, meaning you won't lose your place if you switch between PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or other supported platforms.
This feature, a welcome addition for multi-platform gamers, was implemented at launch, unlike in Civilization VI, where it arrived via a post-launch update. Whether gaming on a Steam Deck, Switch, or home console, your progress remains consistent.
Civilization VII releases on February 11.
