Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the gaming world with its VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive into the details of what Civ 7 VR has in store and get the latest updates on the broader Civ 7 experience.
Civilization 7 VR: A Meta Quest 3 Exclusive
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will be exclusively available on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S platforms. This exciting news was shared by 2K Games and Firaxis Games during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025, marking the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm on the 2K website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, also shared his confidence in the project, noting, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
It's worth noting that while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Immersive Gameplay with Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces players to a Command Table where they can strategize and navigate the game world. The experience simulates a tabletop game, allowing players to zoom in on the intricate details of buildings and units or view the broader landscape from above.
Players can switch between immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes. In VR, players find themselves in a museum setting, overlooking a personalized vista based on their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table seamlessly integrates with the player's physical environment.
The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four players with Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can opt to play with AI-controlled opponents or engage in human-versus-human battles. Online multiplayer requires a 2K Account and a Meta Account, enabling players to see their friends and opponents across the Command Table as their chosen world leaders.
Firaxis Games Responds to Community Feedback
Firaxis Games has taken player feedback from the early access period of Civ 7 seriously. Announced on their official Twitter (X) page, the team is committed to addressing the issues highlighted by the community. Civ 7’s Advanced Access began on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition buyers, and has received mixed reviews on Steam, particularly concerning the User Interface (UI).
In response, Firaxis Games has promised UI improvements to make interactions more intuitive, enhance map readability, and refine other aspects of polish such as formatting. Additionally, they plan to introduce community-requested features like team options in multiplayer, a wider variety of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance and improvements, diplomacy and crisis adjustments, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific release date has not yet been disclosed. Meanwhile, the standard version of Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see a worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
