Randy Pitchford, the head of Borderlands 4, recently hinted that the game's pre-order bundle—including a complimentary Fortnite skin—might turn into a valuable asset. This comes after a previous Borderlands skin reportedly sold for "over $2,000 in eBay trades."
In a social media post, Pitchford promoted the looter shooter's Epic Games Store pre-order deal, which grants players the Mad Moxxi Fortnite outfit. However, fans were quick to note that "trading" skins violates Fortnite's Terms of Service and could lead to account suspension.
"Is it true that the pre-order Psycho Bandit skin became one of Fortnite's most sought-after cosmetics, sometimes selling for over $2,000 on eBay?" Pitchford asked. "What are the chances this new bundle ends up being worth far more than the game itself?"
Let's clarify what Pitchford is referring to. The Psycho Bandit skin originally launched in 2019 as part of a similar Epic Games Store promotion for Borderlands 3. It was also briefly sold in Fortnite's item shop before being removed for an extended period.
During that hiatus, the skin became highly desirable among Fortnite fans. However, its perceived value dropped sharply when it returned to the item shop in April 2025, making it widely available again after five years.
Rare or supposedly discontinued Fortnite cosmetics often capture player interest, though Fortnite itself doesn't allow players to sell or trade in-game items. Instead, some users buy or sell entire accounts containing rare skins—a practice Epic Games explicitly forbids in its Terms of Service, warning that it could lead to long-term or permanent bans.
This is worth remembering if you're considering buying Borderlands 4 primarily as a money-making opportunity through its Fortnite skin. Still, at least the game isn't priced at $80.
Borderlands 4 releases this Friday, September 12, on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, along with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version will follow on October 3.
