Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has unveiled its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. Launched on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 is the last major update for the game. Following its release, BG3 experienced a significant boost in its player count, climbing just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, it has now surged to over 169,000 as of the latest reports.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, took to X (formerly Twitter) on April 22 to comment on the player increase post-Patch 8. He highlighted the game's thriving mod support as a factor that allows them to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been reported that Larian Studios will depart from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative territories.
Consequently, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.
12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
Announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, Patch 8 has been a long time coming. This update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and more. Larian Studios provided a detailed breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website. The patch notes are more extensive than those released in November 2024, featuring numerous bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that this final update polishes BG3 to perfection.
Larian Studios has poured considerable effort into enhancing BG3, as evidenced by the extensive list of fixes and updates in this final version. Although this is their last major patch, Larian Studios has committed to ongoing support for the modding community.
