Atuel: Climate Crisis Game Launches on Android

Argentine indie studio Matajuegos has released its surreal documentary game, Atuel, on Android and PC via Steam. First launched on itch.io in September 2022, Atuel quickly gained attention for its documentary narrative, experimental mechanics, and captivating visuals.

The game has earned multiple awards, such as the Innovation in Experience Design Award at IndieCade 2022. It has also been showcased at festivals and art venues worldwide, including the Cannes Film Marché and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

What Is the Gameplay Like in Atuel?

Atuel examines the profound connection between people and the environment in western Argentina, focusing on the Cuyo desert region. The game blends real-world interviews with fluid, dream-inspired gameplay.

You traverse expansive, surreal landscapes that mirror the real geography of the Atuel River Valley and the Cuyo desert. You become one with this world, transforming into animals, elements of the ecosystem, and even the Atuel River.

As you explore, you’ll hear historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents share their insights into the region’s history, current state, and future. The story explores the global climate crisis and our relationship with land and water. Watch the game in action below.

Here’s an interesting detail: the Atuel River begins in the Andes, flowing from glacial Atuel Lake. As the longest river in Mendoza, it has shaped the Atuel Canyon—a stunning passage through the Valle Grande. This majestic ecosystem served as the game’s inspiration.

Now Available

The game was developed in collaboration with international filmmakers from The 12.01 Project. Lead artist and developer Santiago Franzani describes it as a project meant to evoke the feeling of a dream, not a traditional documentary.

Rather than strict realism, the game creates a poetic, emotional space where stories unfold through movement, form, and sound. You’ll experience a kaleidoscopic narrative that highlights the fragile, intimate ties between humanity and the environment.

Atuel is free to play and includes full controller support. Download it now from the Google Play Store.
