Remember Project Mugen, the much-anticipated urban open-world RPG developed by Naked Rain and published by NetEase? Well, there's a significant update: Project Mugen has officially been renamed to Ananta. This RPG was first unveiled back in August 2023 at Gamescom, and after what seemed like an eternity with no news, the developers have finally released a new trailer. They've promised more details to come on December 5th. Until then, you can check out the official trailer for Project Mugen/Ananta below.
Why the Name Change?
The developers haven’t provided any official explanation for the name change yet. Interestingly, "Ananta" means "infinite" in Sanskrit, which aligns well with the original name, Mugen, also meaning "infinite." The Chinese name further supports this theme of infinity. The gaming community is divided on the new name, but there's a general sigh of relief that the project is still alive and kicking.
Gamers are already comparing Ananta to another eagerly awaited RPG, Neverness to Everness by Hotta Studio. While Ananta's new trailer looks sleek, it doesn't feature any gameplay, leaving Neverness to Everness in the lead for some players. Personally, I find Project Mugen/Ananta to be visually more appealing.
Here’s Where Things Get Weird, Though
In a surprising move, Team Project Mugen has deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel with over 100k subscribers and videos that amassed millions of views. They've retained the Discord server, simply renaming it, but for all other platforms, they've started from scratch. This has left many gamers puzzled, as they could have simply updated the names of the existing accounts.
In Project Mugen or Ananta, you step into the shoes of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator tasked with tackling paranormal chaos. The game features a diverse cast of characters including Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
