The Wheel of Time has come to an end on Prime Video, with Amazon cancelling the series after Season 3 concluded.
According to Deadline, Prime Video opted not to renew The Wheel of Time for a fourth season following what it termed "extensive deliberations." While executives reportedly appreciated the show, they were unable to justify it from a financial standpoint.
The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan's beloved fantasy book series of the same name, starring Rosamund Pike. While the first two seasons received mixed reactions from book fans due to significant deviations from the source material, Season 3 successfully won over much of the fanbase and appeared to position the series for a promising future.
Fans will likely feel especially disappointed by the cancellation, given how much of The Wheel of Time's expansive story remains untold. In many ways, the series was only just hitting its stride.
However, production costs proved too high for co-producers Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios—the latter also backs the high-budget series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
As Deadline explained:
... Season 3's overall performance did not sufficiently justify the series' expense for Prime Video to greenlight another season. After exploring various options and consulting with Sony TV, the streaming service determined it wasn't feasible to continue.
IGN awarded The Wheel of Time Season 3 an 8/10 score. Our review stated: "The Wheel of Time finally realizes its full potential in Season 3, delivering rich character development set in Robert Jordan's intricately crafted fantasy universe."
While the television adaptation has concluded, a AAA open-world RPG set in the same universe is currently in development. IGN recently spoke with iwot Studios, the rights holder for The Wheel of Time, to learn more about the upcoming game.
