The GeForce RTX 4090, though a generation behind the new Blackwell 50 series GPUs, remains a powerhouse in the realm of graphics cards. It surpasses the performance of the RTX 5080, RTX 4080 Super, Radeon RX 9070 XT, and RX 7900 XTX. The only GPU that outshines it is the RTX 5090, which is notoriously difficult to find without a significant price markup.
As the RTX 4090 has been discontinued, it's becoming increasingly challenging to obtain. Fortunately, Dell offers two prebuilt gaming PC models that include the RTX 4090 at competitive prices. The Alienware Aurora R16 gaming PC starts at $2,999.99, while the Dell Tower Plus gaming PC is priced at $2,849.99. These are currently the best deals available for an RTX 4090-equipped system, as other manufacturers like Lenovo and HP have stopped offering RTX 4090 prebuilt options.
Alienware Aurora R16 RTX 4090 Gaming PC
Alienware Aurora R16 Intel Core Ultra 7 265F RTX 4090 Gaming PC
$2,999.99 at Alienware
This Alienware Aurora R16 gaming PC is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265F CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. The processor can be upgraded to an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, but for gaming-focused systems, this upgrade is unnecessary. The Intel Core Ultra 7 265F offers a solid performance with a max turbo frequency of 5.3GHz and 20 cores, cooled by a 240mm all-in-one liquid cooler. The system is powered by a robust 1,000W 80PLUS Platinum power supply.
Dell Tower Plus RTX 4090 Gaming PC

$3,149.99 save 10% $2,849.99 at Dell
The Dell Tower Plus gaming PC, while less flashy, is equally capable, featuring an Intel Core Ultra 7 265F CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. Upgrading to the Intel Core Ultra 7 285K for an additional $100 is recommended, as it also enhances the CPU cooling to a more efficient tower heatsink fan rated for 125W TDP. The system is powered by a 1,000W 80PLUS Platinum power supply.
How does the RTX 4090 stack up against current cards?
The RTX 4090 is the most potent GPU in the RTX 40 series, only outclassed by the RTX 5090 in the new Blackwell lineup. It excels at running games at 4K resolution, comfortably achieving over 60 fps with all settings maxed out, including ray tracing. DLSS support further boosts performance. The only setting that challenges the RTX 4090, as well as other GPUs, is path tracing, which is rarely used outside of benchmarks and demonstrations. For most gamers, the RTX 4090 provides exceptional performance, making the RTX 5090's superior power largely unnecessary.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU Review by Chris Coke
"The RTX 4090 may be huge and expensive, but it truly outshines its competition. As the sole representative of its generation currently available, it's compared to older models, yet its impressive hardware and DLSS 3 AI technology justify its $1,599 price tag with unparalleled frame rates."
Alternative: Alienware RTX 5080 Gaming PC for $2,500
Alienware Aurora R16 Intel Core Ultra 7 265F RTX 5080 Gaming PC
$2,399.99 at Alienware
Dell offers an Alienware Aurora R16 equipped with the new GeForce RTX 5080 GPU for $2,499.99. The RTX 5080, part of the Blackwell series, is scarce. In our Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 FE review, Jackie notes that "For those with recent high-end GPUs, the RTX 5080 might not be a significant upgrade over the RTX 4080. However, its DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation enhances gameplay in supported titles. For gamers upgrading from older cards, the RTX 5080 offers a substantial performance boost, especially if you're keen on Nvidia's AI enhancements."
