The first official trailer for the much-anticipated film "Rust" has been released, marking a significant moment for the project that faced a tragic incident during its production. Starring Alec Baldwin, the movie encountered a devastating accident when a prop gun discharged by Baldwin resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the injury of director Joel Souza on October 22, 2021. Despite the tragedy, "Rust" is slated for a theatrical release on May 2, 2025, and the trailer can be viewed here.
The film's official synopsis sets the stage in 1880s Kansas, where young Lucas McCalister, played by Patrick Scott McDermott, accidentally kills a rancher and faces a death sentence. In a dramatic turn of events, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust, portrayed by Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin, rescues him from jail. Together, they embark on a perilous journey toward Mexico, pursued relentlessly by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel).
The incident on the set of "Rust" involved a prop gun that was mistakenly loaded with live rounds, despite being declared a "cold gun." In the aftermath, charges against Alec Baldwin were dropped in April 2023, while the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, responsible for ensuring the gun was safe, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.
"Rust" made its initial public appearance at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where it paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins during the credits. Although Alec Baldwin was not present at the festival, Joel Souza attended and spoke warmly of Hutchins, emphasizing her passion for filmmaking and her lasting impact on those who knew her.
