The 25 Best-Selling Books Of All Time

Author : Nora Update:Mar 28,2025

Creating a definitive list of the 25 best-selling books of all time is a challenging task, given the complexities of historical sales data and the various formats in which books have been published over the centuries. Books from different eras often have multiple editions, translations, and adaptations, which can make it difficult to pinpoint exact sales figures. Moreover, some books were serialized, abridged, or expanded, further complicating the data. Add to this the issue of exaggerated sales figures by publishers for promotional purposes, and the task becomes even more daunting.

To address these challenges, we've established some ground rules for our list:

  • We're focusing on literary fiction only, excluding religious texts, self-help books, political literature, and other non-fiction works. This means classics like the Bible and Mao Tse Tung's Little Red Book, which would otherwise rank highly, are not included. We've also left out certain iconic works like The Lord of the Rings and The Count of Monte Cristo due to their serialization and age-related data issues.

We invite you to see if your favorite book made the cut and to share your thoughts on whether you think the quality of these books matches their sales figures. Let us know in the comments below. Also, don't forget to check out the best-selling books of 2024 for some recent recommendations to enjoy on your reading tablet.
