11 Bit Studios, the acclaimed Polish developer, has unveiled a new trailer for their much-anticipated sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is inching closer to its release date. Amidst the excitement, the studio took a moment to reminisce about their landmark project, This War of Mine, which thrust them into the global spotlight over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and bleak atmosphere, The Alters shifts gears, embracing a more passionate and frequently humorous narrative that revolves around the trials of alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite these stark tonal contrasts, the developers highlight a deep thematic connection between the two games.
Although the settings and tones of the games differ significantly, both are anchored in the theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players are thrust into the grim realities of wartime survival within a besieged city, meticulously managing resources and facing daily challenges to keep their group alive. Conversely, The Alters frames survival as a race against time, compelling players to relocate their mobile base to evade the destructive path of an unrelenting sun that reduces everything to dust.
Both titles challenge players to step out of their comfort zones, venturing into perilous environments in pursuit of scarce resources. The fundamental difference lies in the protagonists: This War of Mine sees players guiding a group of ordinary civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique ensemble made up of alternate versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025, available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. From day one, it will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, ensuring a wide reach among gaming enthusiasts eager to explore this innovative narrative and survival experience.
