The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, a recent IGN interview with the project leads revealed key information. The sequel is a direct continuation of the original game's storyline.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel's narrative continuity with the original Ōkami. Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at the return of Amaterasu, the great god, a confirmation later provided by Hirabayashi.
While not surprising to fans, the sequel's existence raises questions about the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Ōkamiden received mixed reviews, partly due to its platform and the absence of key original team members. Hirabayashi acknowledged the game's existence and the varied player feedback, emphasizing that the new sequel directly continues the original Ōkami's story.
The original Ōkami's ending, without revealing spoilers, sets the stage for a sequel. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, leaving ample room for fresh challenges and adventures.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the early announcement as a result of their excitement. Further updates, according to Hirabayashi, will be some time in coming.
