The Hang is a captivating musical instrument within the idiophone class, originating from the innovative minds in Switzerland. Its unique design is crafted from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheets, meticulously glued at the rim. This construction results in a hollow interior and a distinctive 'UFO shape'. The top side, referred to as the "Ding," features a central 'note' that's skillfully hammered into place, surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields'. On the other hand, the bottom, known as the "Gu," presents a plain surface with a rolled hole at its center, which produces a tuned note when struck at the rim. This instrument is also known by another name, the handpan.
The Hang operates on similar physical principles to the steelpan, yet it's ingeniously modified to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development is the culmination of extensive research into the steelpan and various other instruments, showcasing a blend of tradition and innovation.
