Typically, 29 is played by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other. The game uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, with eight cards per suit: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The cards rank from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The primary goal is to capture tricks that contain valuable cards.

The card values are:

• Jacks - 3 points each
• Nines - 2 points each
• Aces - 1 point each
• Tens - 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7) - no points

This sums up to 28 points from the cards alone. In some versions, an additional point is awarded for winning the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, which explains the game's name. While many modern players omit the point for the last trick, the game retains its name as 29.

In traditional setups, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are removed from the full 52-card deck, serve as trump indicators. Each player receives one set of these cards, one of each suit. The Sixes are used for keeping score, with each partnership using one red and one black Six.
