Gordang Sambilan, eine traditionelle Kunstform des Volkes der Mandailing Batak, bedeutet wörtlich übersetzt „neun Trommeln“. Dieses Ensemble besteht aus neun Trommeln unterschiedlicher Länge und Durchmesser, von denen jede einen einzigartigen Klang erzeugt. Typischerweise spielen sechs Spieler, wobei die kleineren Trommeln (1 und 2) als Taba-Taba fungieren, Trommel 3 als Tepe-Tepe, Trommeln 4 und 5 als Kudong-Kudong und kudong-kudong nabalik jeweils Trommel 6 as Pasilion und Trommeln 7, 8 und 9 als Jangat. Gordang Sambilan wurde früher nur bei heiligen Zeremonien aufgeführt und wird heute häufig bei Hochzeiten, Begrüßungszeremonien und Feiertagen aufgeführt. Als Beweis seiner kulturellen Bedeutung wurde dieses indonesische Erbe sogar im Präsidentenpalast aufgeführt. [2]
